Re no internet. I'm halfway through a stay in Shenzhen, China and my ExpressVPN has only just started working today. I've been cut off from the outside world, BBC, the Guardian and Yahoo emails since I arrived on Wednesday from Vietnam between visas. Unfortunately there is nowhere else to go to get connected around here! You just have to lump it.
Express VPN told me they've had unprecedented challenges to overcome which their engineers have been working hard to resolve.
Yes travel in China is such a hassle if you rely on the internet. I had a few different VPNs on my last trip as they didn't all work at the same time. Good luck behind the Great Fire Wall!
Sorry about the WiFi! Hope it's back soon!
Interesting about the cable replacement. I wonder if the fiber optic replacement was undergrounded. Guessing unlikely.
Also, on the SriLankan Pekoe trail, this is mapped in stages on AllTrails. There's a Facebook group, referenced in the Stage 1 writeup.

Thanks for the link, add a bit more context.
There is underground work happening on the street, so yes!

And of course, the bitter irony of blocked internet in Shenzhen is that it's home to two of the world's biggest telcos, Huawei and ZTE.
