Hi James, while in CM have you visited Elephant Nature Park, the elephant sanctuary run by Lek Chailert, featured in the movie Love and Bananas? Her ethical san tiary is really worth a visit. No elephant riding, no bathing.
I've never been, which is crazy because a friend was working there around the time I was spending more time here. Lek has been influential in the elephant world for sure. I've noticed this year that pretty much every elephant tour now proclaims to have "no riding", so things are changing here.
Lek is of a great influence to make changes in that field for a respectful treatment of animals with an accent on the elephants in particular. She is also an advisor to the government on animal welfare. Her influence is catching on, she's opened a sanctuary in Laos and Cambodia but is also impowering other camps to switch to no riding. I volunteered 1 week at ENP for my bday in 2018, a life changing experience.
