I recommend the Hammock Hotel in Ben Thanh (there's also one by the Fine Arts museum but it's not as good). Great location, lovely rooms, free beer and snacks, and a roof terrace with views and hammocks. Each room also comes with a hammock chair, although it's worth springing for the deluxe if you want space to work. I've been back three times now, partly because it's a short hop to two of my favourite banh mi vendors.

We were in Vang Vieng just before the Covid lockdown. Our nighttime entertainment over a beer was watching a mother cat catching rats by the river and brining them to her kittens. At least 4 bug juicy ones. Good job Mom.

Vang Vieng airstrip was Air America's "L16", note: not LS16 that was Phou Fa. Source: Air America Air Facilities Data Laos 1974.

There are like a zillion old air strips in Laos, only some of which are visible in over head imagery or converted to civilian use. I started a project to put them in a spreadsheet with geo coordinates, but it's a long process. With the coordinates and some time, others pop out of the background.

The last listed in LS450, but more than 450 total since some were "L" and some "LS." Supposedly L were unimproved; LS were paved.

Good idea for a site project. An option would be to turn it into a wiki site like https://beyondangkor.org/i and then others can add data. I am hoping to go to the Central Highlands next year, so maybe I will walk the old BMT airfield.
