Bingo on the quote about travel writing ruining some travel articles. I started reading about how to write better travel stories and my disdain for the 'checklist' articles grew. Also - I've got some travel stories myself on old blogs and I can count the views on my two hands. LOL I'm going to try to migrate those stories to here. But yes, I have a feeling a lot of the best writing is out there undiscovered. Hope you survive the smoke. Chiang Mai is one of my faves....
